All images are indexed with the following keywords: 1) habitat nomenclature, 2) seasons when photographed (including blooming or fruiting), 3) colors, 4) English common names for Species and Family, 5) Latin names for Family, Genus, and Species, and 6) other miscellaneous information specific for a given photo. Several habitat keywords are presented here:

Scientific and Common Names listed with each image follow the publications of Gleason and Cronquist (1991, Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada, 2nd ed., New York Botanical Garden. 910 pp.) and Kartesz (1994, A Synonymized Checklist of the Vascular Flora of the United Greenland. Vol. 1 (622 pp.) & Vol. 2 (816 pp.). Timber Press, Portland, OR.) Typically, it is unusual for a publication to acknowledge more than one taxonomic work; however, these two references are both current and widely used. Among traditional botanists, there is a tendency to use the former, as it has its original foundation in an earlier text, The New Britton and Brown Illustrated Flora of the Northeastern United States and adjacent Canada (Gleason 1952). At present, a number of botanists, conservation groups, and other organizations are using the checklist of Kartesz. It is presumed among some botanists that his checklist will eventually become the primary reference for plant taxonomic nomenclature in North America.
All species have been verified by Mr. Thomas Wieboldt of the Massey Herbarium at Virginia Tech.
